Transformation | Initiatives

The non-alcoholic beverage industry in South Africa is committed to being part of the solution to South Africa’s multi-faceted challenges, especially as they relate to job creation and transformation. To this end the industry has embarked on a series of initiatives to drive transformation across the industry value chain. These initiatives are aimed at bringing new players in the supply chain and to enhance competition to improve the value chain efficiency.

The transformation projects that industry is currently leading are as follows:
  • Import substitution of phosphoric and citric acid to develop and incorporate a new black owned entity or player to supply industry;
  • New PET resin supplier to the industry to diversify and enhance competition through a black owned entity;
  • Shrink and stretch wrapping to localise supply that is currently imported for some of the materials used across the industry

    In the ten months since the Health Promotions Levy (HPL) was introduced, it has put pressure on the local non-alcoholic industry in already difficult operating conditions, as well as raising prices for hard-pressed consumers. The net impact of the levy has been compounded by subdued economic growth in the country and higher input costs of raw materials and ingredients, in particular, sugar. Consequently, this is limited the opportunity for growth and job creation in the sector and has resulted in downward pressure on the full value chain.
